Holiday home with garden and patio. Perfect spot to explore La Costa da Prata! | Ski Chalet in São Martinho do Porto

3 Bedroom Ski Chalet in Sao Martinho do Porto, São Martinho do Porto
Casa de Agave, with its beautiful, peaceful gardens and comfortable accommodations, is well-located in a rural area on the landward side of the cliffs that overlook Praia do Salgado. It is the ideal spot to relax, enjoy, and explore the famous "Costa da Prata" with its natural beauty; large and pristine sandy beaches; rugged coast; hiking and biking trails; fertile valleys; mountain views, traditional villages, historic and religious sites, excellent gastronomy, the biggest waves in the world (Praia do Norte, Nazaré), and many tourist hotspots.
The house has 3 double bedrooms (2 doubles and 2 twin beds), and 2 bathrooms (a large bathroom with bathtub and shower and one with shower). Each room has closet space and a sliding glass door to the yard. There is a fully-equipped kitchen with plenty of good dishware, cookware, utensils, and appliances. An island separates the kitchen from the dining area with its sunlit windows looking out to the garden and the patio. The living room has a large chimney, smart TV, sound system, books and music CDs, fiber-optic WIFI, comfortable furniture, and cozy decorations. The rooms are spacious and the ceiling is high.
There is a pellet-heating system and a wood-burning fireplace that warms the house when the temperatures are cool. The house is ventilated all year long with an efficient solar-powered system that keeps humidity out and the air flowing. There is no air-conditioning but the mild weather and the cool nights allow for a comfortable temperature even in the summer months.
Out front, there is a garage with a washer and dryer and plenty of parking space inside the gated area.
Casa da Agave has a large garden space with flowering shrubs, fruit trees (olive, fig, apple, peach, orange, lemon, apricot, pear ... ), a variety of plants, and a small vegetable garden where you can help yourself to lettuce, tomatoes, and herbs in the summer. There is a wood-burning barbeque and outdoor furniture to enjoy the beautiful and peaceful gardens, the sounds of the waves in the distance, the song of the birds and frogs (or an occasional rooster), and the dark star-studded nights.
The house is centrally located to explore the Costa de Prata and all the monumental, historical, and natural sites of beauty and interest. Situated between Sao Martinho do Porto, with its shell-shaped, family-friendly beach, a boardwalk, passadiços to explore the natural dunes, restaurants, and easy-going atmosphere (3.4 km 10-minute bike ride! Great walk!), and Nazaré (11 km.), known for the "Biggest Waves," stunning natural beauty, rich culture, and great food!
Just over the hill lies Salgado Beach, a 6-km. stretch of sandy, pristine beach idyllic for walking, enjoying the sun and fresh air, and taking in the impressive views of Mangues Mountain, paragliders overhead, and the powerful surf. In season, there are lifeguards on duty, but beware, the waters can be treacherous. Bathing is not recommended unless the green flag is flying and the beach is supervised. Be careful and let yourself be awed!
Salgado Beach can be accessed by country trails that take you through the beautiful "campo" with its cactuses, dune plants, and a wonderful display of wildflowers in season. If you prefer to drive, there are parking places at the Mirador (overlook) and at the service beach, which offers toilets, food and beverage options, and ample parking spaces. There is a fabulous "chiringuito", El Anzol, at the entrance. Eat fresh fish and the best! clams on the patio watching the magnificent waves breaking on the beach!
Nearby are the bustling towns of Nazaré and Sao Martinho do Porto with plentiful restaurants, supermarkets, local markets, pharmacies, and any services you might need.
Recommended places to visit:
* Sao Martinho do Porto, just kilometers away, is a beautiful, horseshoe-shaped bay carved out of the rocky headlands by the powerful Atlantic Ocean. It is considered the best family-friendly beach in the area. You can take sailing and pedal-boat rides, or walk along the promenade and stop for a refreshment or delicious meal. On the north side of the beach, there are some excellent restaurants near the opening to the sea (and a tunnel that takes you to the unbound ocean). If you prefer a more natural experience, the south side of the beach offers sand dunes and the "Passadiços da Baía de São Martinho do Porto," hiking trails on restored wooden walkways. The views and sunsets are awe-inspiring.
* Nazaré (11 kms. by car), famous for its giant waves, cultural traditions, and historical monuments --some of them World Heritage Sites--is one of my favorite places to visit The beach of Nazaré maintains some of the oldest fishing traditions in Portugal. The picturesque beach--a wide, sandy half-moon--is a perfect place to spend the day. The waves can be rough, but they are not to be confused with the "Big Waves" found on Praia do Norte. "Few waves inspire more awe and fear ... on a big day. The waves can reach more than 100 feet in the winter season, which means surfers are riding at around 50 miles per hour. It’s where the majority of big-wave world records have been set." In fact, "Sebastian Steudtner (GER) set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the largest wave surfed (unlimited) - male. As part of the Red Bull Big Wave Awards, the WSL has verified Sebastian Steudtner's 2021 Big Wave Award-winning ride as 86 feet (26.21 meters), which was caught at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal on October 29, 2020". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIXbZPHLv2o
"The formation of such big waves here is explained by the location of the Nazaré Canyon, the biggest underwater ravine in Europe, 200km long and a depth that can reach 5,000m. Its headwall, less than 1km off the coast, affects the characteristics of the swell, as it presents itself from the west, creating giant waves." (Visit Portugal)
If we look towards the sea from Nazaré, on the right side, there is a promontory of 318 meters of rock where the colorful and traditional area of "El Sitio" is found. From this spot, one has an impressive, panoramic view of the coast. The town above can be reached on foot, or better yet, take the funicular for a fun ride up to the top. Here you can wind your way around the cliffs to the plaza where women in traditional skirts, petticoats, and head scarves sell you sweets and nuts. The Church of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré is known for its tilework and Virgin Mary statue, and the Capilla da Memoria represents the founding of the town in honor of the Virgin. Not very far is the Museum Dr. Joaquim Manso, where you can learn about the Nazarene traditions in more detail. Continue walking to the Farol da Nazaré, the little red lighthouse. With the endless ocean as its backdrop, it sits atop jagged cliffs that are over 1,000 feet high. If you visit during the big wave season, you will be awed by the magnificence and power of the waves and the bravery and skill of these extreme-wave surfers. The Nazare Lighthouse is located right next to São Miguel Arcanjo Fort, which overlooks Praia do Norte.
*The Batalha Monastery (45-minute drive); Patrimonio de La Humanidad
* Abadía de Santa María de Alcobaça (25-minute drive), the first Gothic Temple in Portugal, Patrimonio de La Humanidad
* Obidos (30-minute drive) is the finest example of a Portuguese walled town and is one of the best tourist destinations of the Lisbon region (Maravilla de Portugal)
* Lisbon (1h20 minute drive); there are buses from Sao Martinho) See all of it! Amazing!
* Monasterio de los Jerónimos de Santa María de Belém (Lisbon) (Maravilla de Portugal)
* La torre de Belém (Lisbon) (Maravilla de Portugal)
* Palacio Nacional da Pena (Sintra). Maravilla de Portugal
* Sintra (1h30 minute drive) is a pioneer work of European romanticism, bringing together its incredible botanical richness and diversity of monuments and buildings from a long period of history. Fascinating place... side trip to Cascais is recommended.
* Other towns and places of "charme" located nearby are Caldas da Raina, Praia da Gralha (secluded sand-beach cove surrounded by bluffs, offering sunning, swimming & kitesurfing), Lagoa de Óbidos, El Sitio de Nazaré, the coast north of Nazaré (great beaches), the Patais market (has everything! love to go there!), Peniche (surfers' favorite, 40-minute drive), and so much more!
Or you can choose to stay "em casa" to enjoy the wonderful garden and patio, cook up a big meal for your friends, sit by the cozy fireplace, watch a movie... Make yourself at home!
